Death of the Epicurean Lunchroom.

Not that anyone actually is interested in school lunches, for one.

Second, there are some things in the cafeteria that I’m just not willing to eat. Not going to put myself through that.

Third, the backpack is huge and I don’t want to kill my camera every day.

Fourth, school is too busy and such for me to care about what I’m eating at the moment.

Yup.

Sorry about that, if anyone actually did enjoy those.

(It didn’t last long, anyways)

The Epicurean Lunchroom, Day 7

I’m really not sure what this was…I think it was supposed to be tamales. Not sure. But the lunch lady just kind of…glopped it onto the tray. BUT THERE WAS GREEN. Lower right hand corner of the second picture. Yeah. I’m not really sure what it was, but it was green. This was like Mystery Lunch. Basically all variables are undefined and such.

Not sure what else I can say. The pictures say it all.

The Epicurean Lunchroom, Day 6

You guys missed a great day. Or rather, I screwed up by not bringing my camera. Basically, I got this thing called Mexican pizza. Maybe I’ll buy it again sometime and make another post just for it with pictures.

In the meantime, I shall try to describe it to the best of my meager abilities.

Basically, Mexican pizza is the cafeteria’s name for a little octagon of flat, dry dough with equally dry tomato sauce on top, covered with dried out orange cheese. When I say orange, I mean orange. Imagine ten shades darker than a school bus.

Or better yet, here’s a picture that comes closest to it.

That orange right in the middle? That’s the color of the cheese. The whole thing is topped with dry little sausage balls that look like they were rolled in lint batter or something. Have I mentioned that the cafeteria isn’t very vegan or vegetarian friendly? Even the salads have meat. Not a problem for me, but…

Anyways, I had that with canned peaches, Spanish rice, and beans. I probably should have known better, since in middle school, some kid vomited after eating it, but I pretty much have a stomach of iron.

By seventh period, I felt a little nauseous, though. Yeah, no.

The Epicurean Lunchroom, Day 5

This is possibly one of the more popular meals at our school: the calzone. Pepperoni pizza folded in half and crimped shut, but not before stuffing it extra full of pepperoni and lovely orange grease. The stuff drips out of it like a leaky faucet. You can kind of see it in the upper left of the tray in the first picture. That’s before even cutting it open. Paired with more orange in the form of carrots, and packaged, sliced Gala apples (I think they’re Gala, but they’ve been coated in some kind of preservative to keep them that bright, crisp, yellow color, so I can’t really taste it.), and you’ve got the perfect greenless lunch. Oh wait. There’s green. There, you see it? Those herbs? On the calzone? Cafeteria, the balanced meal achievement goes to you.

The Epicurean Lunchroom, Day 4
This is just too perfect. We’ve got orange, darker orange, and just for some variety, let’s throw in some dandelion.
I’m not calling it peach. That color is about the farthest thing you can get from peach and still have it in the same overarching area between red and yellow. Keep in mind, this is an example of taking full advantage of what they serve us at school. All gourmet errday.

The Epicurean Lunchroom, Day 3

Shown above, a wrap (I’m telling you, everything is yellow, orange, or red, even the tortillas), and a cross section of said wrap. This particular wrap lacks beans, because I just don’t like beans, I’m sorry. If I’m going to to be eating beans, they better be baked, refried, or soy beans. It also doesn’t have any kind of sauce because who likes soggy wraps, and no jalapenos because I don’t handle spicy well.

But yeah, it has pretty much everything else: chicken, rice, lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. Oh wait, that’s right, you can’t see the lettuce, can you? It’s like that Pollock painting where you’re supposed to find the one red dot.

It’s there, I promise.

Credits to souleolion for taking the second picture. That’s also her physics homework.

The Epicurean Lunchroom, Day 2

I’m really too lazy to upload pictures every day. I just don’t take enough.

Exhibit B:

Nachos are an essential part of your diet. You get your carbs, your proteins, your dairy product. What more could you ask for? Oh. You need your veggies. Like beans - beans are a fantastic vegetable. And if you haven’t got enough fiber yet, have some canned pineapple. It’s just exquisite.

To be honest, I do like canned pineapple.

Today’s color palette: Orange, yellow. I count brown as dark orange. Play with your color wheel in MS Paint. You’ll understand.

The Epicurean Lunchroom, Day 1

Thus begins my quest to sample everything our cafeteria has to offer.

Here, we have a lovely splash of color in the form of a primitive predecessor to the chicken pot pie. As you can see, the “chicken pot” has been placed in a bowl, while the “pie” part of the dish has been separated. Pictured above is some lovely golden corn, and yellow fruit cocktail.

As you can see, the predominant color of the day is orange, although the green peas are a pleasant surprise.

Now for storytime. I got to the lunch line, and the other line, which serves tortillas filled with chicken flavored toothpaste, which people are inexplicably attracted to, was crazy busy, so there was no one working the line I was in. There was, however, the lovey tray pictured above. The only difference was that the bun was in the bowl. So I waited, and when the lunch lady came over, I asked if I could have the bun on the side. Naturally, that involves taking the bun out of the bowl and plopping it down on the side.

I’m revising my theory. I now believe that 95% of what we’re served is a shade of red, orange, or yellow.

Nutritious & Delicious

I’ll be starting this next week.

Basically, what I’ve been planning on doing for awhile now: Take my camera to school, buy a lunch, take full advantage of our “healthy, balanced meals,” including whatever fruits and vegetables are offered in whatever line I can get to, and get a picture. Every day.

I WILL NOT FORGET.

Probably will. If I think about it hard enough, I might remember, though.
